Today is Reconciliation Day, a public holiday aimed at fostering reconciliation and national unity. It was previously known as the Day of the Vow or Dingaan's Day, and marked a victory by the voortrekkers over the Zulus in the battle of Blood River. After the end of aparthied, December 16 became a celebration for the end of aparthied and promoting unity between the country’s diverse racial groups. But the 2021 Reconciliation Barometer released yesterday found that 72% of 2,400 respondents surveyed felt that some of the divisions of the past still persist.
