Blocks of molten lava the size of a three-story building have slid down a hillside on the Spanish island of La Palma as a series of tremors shook the ground three weeks after the volcanic eruption.
There were 21 seismic movements on Sunday, with the largest measuring 3.8, said Spain's National Geological Institute, shaking the ground in the villages of Mazo, Fuencaliente and El Paso.
The block of red-hot magma flowing down the side of the Cumbre Vieja volcano is the size of a three-story building, Spain's Institute of Geology and Mines said on Sunday.
There was a partial collapse of the cone near the volcano's emission vent on Saturday, said Stavros Meletlidis, a spokesman for the National Geological Institute.
"The collapse of the northern flank of the Cumbre Vieja volcano has led to the release of large blocks of material and the emergence of new flows flowing through the already evacuated area," Spain's Ministry of National Security tweeted.
The river of lava has destroyed 1,186 buildings since the eruption on September 19, the Canary Islands Volcanic Institute said.
The lava has swallowed 493 hectares of land, said Miguel ngel Morcuende, technical director of the Canary Islands Volcanic Emergency Plan organization.
More than 6,000 people have been evacuated from their homes in La Palma, which has a population of more than 83,000.
Authorities on Spain's La Palma island say they are tightening their surveillance of the volcano erupting after part of the crater collapsed and released a flow of more fluid, faster-moving lava.
The crater is "like a dam," said Maria Jose Blanco, director of the National Geography Institute in the Canary Islands.
The lava flows, with temperatures up to 1,240 degrees Celsius (2,264 degrees Fahrenheit), destroyed the last few buildings still standing in the village of Todoque, the Canary Islands Institute of Volcanology said.
Starting Monday, members of the Spanish Navy will help clear the volcanic ash that covers much of the island, Defense Minister Margarita Robles said during a visit on Sunday.
There was a partial collapse of the cone near the volcano's emission vent on Saturday, Stavros Meletlidis, a spokesman for the National Geological Institute told Reuters.
"The collapse of the northern flank of the Cumbre Vieja volcano has led to the release of large blocks of material and the emergence of new flows flowing through the already evacuated area," Spain's Ministry of National Security tweeted.
