The Chancellor Rishi Sunak has insisted he still stood for low tax Conservatism, telling Trevor Philips: "That's what I would want to deliver and that's what my instincts are.
"But you also have to take a step back and think what have I and the government had to grapple with over the past year and a half.
"We have had the biggest economic shock we have experienced in 300 years. We have had the need rightly to support the country through that, which has obviously been enormously costly.
"Those are the things I am grappling with and I have got to take the world as it comes.
"I wish I hadn't had to deal with coronavirus and a once in a 300-year economic shock and all the damage that has done to our economy."
