Purpose of feedback
• Learning – improved performance
o So, relieving stress
o And avoiding wasteful re-work or expensive mistakes
• Also, motivation
• Aligning expectations
Feedback Types
1. Judgmental
• Positive – point out what’s good, sideline what’s poor
• Negative – focus on mistakes and how to correct them
• Balanced – as it sounds
2. Non-judgmental
Non judgmental feedback is the appropriate feedback approach for:
Ideal for learning allows people to better understand the situation and facilitation helps them draw their own learning from the experience. Ideal for resilient, motivated individuals. Ideal context is a short-form or longer coaching conversation.
Where to find the balance in judgmental feedback…
This depends on the level of capability that the other person is able to demonstrate.
